Somehow the problem disappeared once I edited /etc/default/hal by adding the --verbose=yes option to the daemon. And then the problem did stay away when removing the --verbose=yes.
It sounds like the default /etc/default/hal option has some problem, maybe a missing end of line or something. I cannot reproduce it though.
