I've just hit Precondition Failed as well, just with
branch.lifecycle_status = 'Abandoned'
branch.lp_save()
though maybe it's a case of different bug, same manifestation.
Any advice would be appreciated, as I know of no other way to achieve
this.

When adding tag or updating description, lp_save() gives "HTTP Error 412:
