Just an update:

I have now booted a few times successfully into kernel 2.6.28-13-generic
#45-Ubuntu, but a few minutes ago I had the same problem (lockup at boot
at the gdm prompt). So the problem is still there (I'm constantly
updating my system). Right now working again with 2.6.27-11.
