I did some more thorough testing, and found that the problem is in
package gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly

I can install any combination of gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg, gstreamer0.10
-plugins-bad, and gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad-multiverse and DivX will
function as expected (though none provide WMV/ASF support).

As soon as you install gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly, it breaks DivX audio
and I have not found a way to revert back. I have setup a virtual
machine that restores to a snapshot on power-off to do my testing.

I have tried installing gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly_0.10.12-1_i386.deb
from the repos (date jun23-09), but i'm not terribly savvy at installing
unapproved packages. By installing this package I was able to get DivX
audio to work, and adding gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg gave me the video and
audio, and things continued to work... but for some reason the new
plugins-ugly package didn't enable WMV/ASF support like the release
version did.

So i guess... to bridge the gap, is there a package I can install that
will enable WMV/ASF support in totem-gstreamer0.10? That is all I am
missing. If I have a package that will do that, I can do the following
and I think all my codec needs will be covered:

<base install>
gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg
gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad
<some package to enable WMV/ASF>

thanks!
