Public bug reported:

Burning DVD is not possible in my Sony VAIO VGN-FS415M with Ubuntu
Jackalope. Brasero shows that it is missing a plug-in for the type of
media I am using (a normal blank 4.7Gb DVD), and does not go forward.
K3b also fails.

The DVD device is a MATSHITA UJ-841D, that is: an optical doubler-layer
DVD-RW driver.

I installed Debian Lenny on my second partition for more tests and
verified that I can burn DVDs with it normally. I also remember I could
burn DVDs with Ubuntu 8.04. So, the problem seems to be with Ubuntu 9.04
(and possibly with 8.10).

Comparing the dmesg files of Ubuntu and Debian, after boot time, I
verified they are using different drivers for the DVD device:

Sessions from dmesg in Ubuntu:
===================
...
[ 2.793560] Driver 'sd' needs updating - please use bus_type methods
[ 2.793569] Driver 'sr' needs updating - please use bus_type methods
...
[ 3.145054] sd 0:0:0:0: Attached scsi generic sg0 type 0
[ 3.146995] scsi 0:0:1:0: CD-ROM MATSHITA UJ-841D 1.10 PQ: 0 ANSI: 5
[ 3.151426] sr0: scsi3-mmc drive: 24x/24x writer cd/rw xa/form2 cdda tray
[ 3.151430] Uniform CD-ROM driver Revision: 3.20
[ 3.151512] sr 0:0:1:0: Attached scsi CD-ROM sr0
[ 3.151548] sr 0:0:1:0: Attached scsi generic sg1 type 5
...

Sessions from dmesg in Debian:
===================
...
[ 4.524331] hdb: MATSHITAUJ-841D, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive
...
[ 4.580594] hdb: host max PIO4 wanted PIO255(auto-tune) selected PIO4
[ 4.580915] hdb: UDMA/33 mode selected
...
[ 4.748346] hdb: ATAPI 24X DVD-ROM DVD-R CD-R/RW drive, 2048kB Cache

By the details above, I am concluding that the Ubuntu 9.04 kernel is
using scsi3-mmc and reconizes my DVD device as a simple CD-RW/DVD-R
driver (without DVD writable capabilities).

There are two tickets related to this bug, #176538 and #258833, but,
unfortunately, they provide no solution.

How can we solve this?
