FWIW, "gnome-screensaver-command -a" does activate the screen saver for
me in a Gnome session (XFCE unfortunately does not bring up the window
manager in Karmic for me)

PS: Charlie just told me in IRC that the above command works for him as
well, but that the timed activation of the screensaver does not.
