I'm also having this problem when switching users.

If I either hit the power button and switch users or switch users from
screen lock, as soon as the new login screen loads up the mouse doesn't
work. Oddly if I ctrl+alt+F7, then ctrl+alt+F9 the mouse works fine,
and when I log out of the new session the mouse returns to the old one
just fine.

I am also using a touch pad with the synaptics driver on an hp pavilion
dv2120us.

nothing in /var/log/messages or /var/log/syslog that seems related.

from /var/log/Xorg.20.log:

This is really annoying as me and my girlfriend share a laptop but not
our user passwords. If there is any other information that might be of
use please let me know.
