Yup, that worked for me! So: Setting /etc/pam.d/vmware-authd to reference vmware's 32 bit libraries (per farther above) + dg's fix and I now have a working (and actually authenticating!) vmware 1.09 on 64 bit 9.04 Ubuntu with the 2.6.28-13 kernel.
