Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: smartmontools

I just found out that calling "smartctl" keeps my harddrive spinning
although this doesn't seem to be necessary. If my harddrive is in
standby...

  $ hdparm -C /dev/sdc
  /dev/sdc:
   drive state is: standby

... then I can use "smartctl -A /dev/sdc" to read all the SMART
information without spinning up the disk (checked with "hdparm -C" after
using "smartctl").

However, if the disk is currently spinning (due to a read or write
access; "hdparm" say "active/idle") calling "smartctl" prevents the disk
from spinning down.

I'm using Ubuntu 9.04 with smartmontools 5.38-2ubuntu2.

** Affects: smartmontools (Ubuntu)
