i tried again (having been assured that it works with 6.10 by
http://ubuntu.blog.de/) and this time the 'sudo screen' appeared and
sbackup started. in the 'destination' tab the dialog for the selection
of 'custom local backup directory' is somewhat unusual (/media/xx
instead of /dev/hdaxx) but works.

therefore: sbackup works

but:
- with default /var/backups it remains dangerous because it fills partition to
100% and then the system blocks and cannot be restarted -

- the dialog to select the destination is awkward

sorry for being somewhat rash - but any situation where you find your
system not starting is uncomfortable (to say the least). please correct
this (check to leave some space on the system partition!)

thanks!
