@Alan, your dmesg looks like this would fall into a different class of
problems. It sounds like the device gives an error on being probed while
it looks most issues in this bug were because the devices report a
incorrect number of sectors. Can I ask you to open a separate bug
please? When doing so, it would be good to have the dmesg of the working
case, the dmesg of the failing case (in both cases the full dmesg) and
the lsusb output again. One thing to try might be to try booting with
"usbcore.old_scheme_first=1".

@Just to make sure your problem is a bad sector number from the device,
could you also post the dmesg? I noted from the lsusb output that your
phone is a USB2 device while it seems to be connected to a USB1 hub.
Depending on the dmesg this might be unrelated but it also might be
worth a try switching ports...
