I ran slapd with -d any and figured out that the problem is in the following lines in /etc/ldap/slapd.conf (it seems they were added by package update script)
overlay syncprov syncprov-checkpoint 100 10 syncprov-sessionlog 100 Unfortunately, I can't reproduce the exact error message - this slapd instance is critical for our network.
