Pedro, Thanks for the response. Having performed software maintenance in the past myself, I appreciate the difficulty that this type of problem presents. I don't know how to reproduce the problem. I'll attempt to gather information about additional symptoms the next time it occurs.
I do have other things going on with my system that have some impact on the problem. I have a bad disk drive that continually resetting. The X window system dies once or twice a week with nothing in the messages log. I don't know if these problems or related or not.
