Installing on a 1.5TB SATA disk, Ubuntu 9.04, installer crashed.

Running from the commandline:

r...@ubuntu:/target/boot/grub# grub-install --root-directory=/target /dev/sda
grub-probe: error: Cannot open `/boot/grub/device.map'
[: 494: =: unexpected operator
The file /target/boot/grub/stage1 not read correctly.

r...@ubuntu:/target/boot/grub# chroot /target
r...@ubuntu:/# grub-install /dev/sda
Searching for GRUB installation directory ... found: /boot/grub
The file /boot/grub/stage1 not read correctly.

stage1 file exists.. I'm trying to put the Linux partition in the last
30GB of the 1.5TB disk, I suspect it's a cylinder limit problem.
