I just discovered something important. In my BIOS, if I change the "SATA Operation" setting from the default which is AHCI (Advanced Host Controller Interface) to ATA, I am able to boot from Feisty Fawn Herd 1 and 2 just fine! I don't really know what SATA Operation means and whether or not Ubuntu should boot correctly if it is set to AHCI.
