The last changes to gnome volume control have made the problem much more severe. With the new applet I have no way to change input source, toggling it back and forth to work around the bug as described earlier. In the Sound Preferences window, in the input tab under "Choose a device for sound input", I have only "Internal Audio" now. It means that my external microphone is now not working, period.
