I apologize for not keeping this up to date with where things are at.
I've been in touch with the driver's maintainer (Matthew Garrett) and a
patch has been made. What he has done is separated the signals for the
dock and the tablet swivel. Before it was all one signal (which I wasn't
aware of since I have no dock).

This patch adds a tablet switch node to the hp-wmi platform device. I'm
still working on getting hal to play nice with it, but for now I have a
(nasty) workaround that uses inotifywait to check the event device
created for hp-wmi hotkeys (swivel changes report there strangely) for
changes and execute a script upon finding a change.

Patch is attached.
