Your syslog clearly shows that the killswitch has disabled wireless
which is why Network-Manager doesn't see it:

I would suggest that you do a re-install and/or remove madwifi, it's
been deprecated in favor of ath5k.
Does your device have a physical kill switch for the wireless?

Ubuntu can't use Atheros wifi on ACER ASPIRE ONE. It was the problem before I
made enable madwifi. And on 8.10 Ubuntu too.
