The combination or resolution+frequency is outside of the capabilities
reported by the monitor.

To use the resolution 1600x1200, it will be necessary to select a lower
refresh-frequency so that the combination is within the range reported
by the monitor.

This area is still more complicated than it should be. If you drop to a
virtual console (Ctrl-Alt-F1) and then run:

  sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

you should be able to select a lower refresh rate (press 'enter' to
select the auto-detected default for the rest of the questions).

There's more information from the following pages; although they are
mainly focused on a slightly different issue:

  https://help.ubuntu.com/community/FixVideoResolutionHowto
  http://doc.gwos.org/index.php/ChangeResolution

if the auto-detection is still failing, it may be necessary to insert a
'modeline' to force a particular resolution/frequency, and you can use
an online-mode generator to create this line (see the second document
above).

Hope that's enough to get you started!
