Public bug reported:
I installed 9.10 x64 from a daily live CD
default is gnome desktop
then installed kubuntu-desktop
then removed kubuntu-desktop
startup and shutdown screens didn't change back
when I rebooted I got the command line login and after logging in I had to do
xstart
