I am currently battling a similar issue.

Basic Steps:
Upgrade 8.10->9.04 using Update Manager app.
Upgrade appears successful. Reboot. Get nice new login screen.
Enter my uname/passwd - all I get a mouse pointer and a black screen - desktop
never loads (I've left it running for days, no toolbars, no background, nothing
but a mouse pointer)

If it helps - I only see the problem with EXISTING users (actually it
was the same user account I used to run the upgrade). After days of
fighting with it, I created a new user which is able to login and the
desktop *seems* to load correctly.

After futzing around reading forums and trying different things, I
eventually got the wallpaper to load (killed pulse-audio procs), but
still no desktop.

A few things I tried:
Mucked around with xorg.conf - someone suggested adding drivers to in Section
"Device". I tried :
Driver "vesa"
No good
Then:
Driver "i810"
for the on-board intel video device - still no good
Eventually I ran Xorg --config and the app rebuilt xorg.conf with a whole bunch
of stuff that wasn't in the default file.

I logged in as root to tty1 - killed all gdm and Xorg procs - then executed
startx. At this point the desktop loaded.
Then I tried the same thing logged in as my normal user account - no good
(mouse pointer and black screen)
This is when I tired creating a new user... regular gdm login or running startx
- desktop loaded with no problems (took about 10 seconds to load toolbars and
various widgets).

Since new users (and root account) are able to run gdm and load the
desktop successfully I think the problem may be with my user
profile/configs in my normal user account. This took me to ~/.gconf - I
am currently messing around, diff-ing various files and directories in
my user configuration folders, but nothing seems to be working.

I also tried removing my normal user account and recreating it... but
it's using the same home folder so I'm guessing the configs are still
jacked because it did NOT fix my gnome/gdm/non-loading !...@#!$#@ desktop!

Needless to say I am anxiously awaiting a resolution to this problem.
Please let me know if you need additional info, /var/logs or anything
else.
