Public bug reported:
Running Jaunty and installed the grub-pc package. This should have
allowed me to chain load into grub2 or just load with grub1 as always.
The grub-pc package changed all of the:
uuid 1adce...........ecag
statements to be:
root 1adce...........ecag
rendering the machine to be unbootable with either grub1 or grub2.
Changing the 'root' to be 'uuid' restored the boot process.
