Can you try one last quick test and try either the most recent 2.6.31-rc3 Mainline kernel build - https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/MainlineBuilds or grab and test the latest Karmic Alpha Image which contains a 2.6.31-rc3 based Ubuntu kernel - http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ . If the issue remains I think you could mount a USB stick after you are dropped into a busybox to try and grab log files (eg. dmesg). Thanks.
