Public bug reported:
After upgrading to linux-image-2.6.24-24-generic from linux-
image-2.6.24-23-generic via Software Update, whenever I play a
multimedia file such as .ogg video or .mp3 music, Ubuntu freezes and has
to be powered off.
Starting Ubuntu with linux-image-2.6.24-23-generic via GRUB boot menu
fixes the problem.
My employer also experiences the same. When he opens up a .mpg movie
with Totem it plays very slowly (5 frames/second) and the sound doesn't
come out. When he opens up the movie with VLC, it plays normally but
without sound. When he opens up a .mp3 file with Rhythmbox, the slider
won't even move.
Starting Ubuntu with linux-image-2.6.24-19-generic solves his problem.
