Thanks...  Though I gave up on KDE in general.  I made the switch to
ubuntu LTS in Jan 2009 and the problem seemed to have remedied itself
for the most part.  On the odd occasion when I do get the dpms problem,
I now run

       xset dpms force off

to manually turn the screen off.  To do this in a perl script so that
hitting enter doesn't trigger the monitor back on instantaneously:

      gedit manual_dpms_off

     #!/usr/bin/perl -w
     sleep 1;
     system ("xset dpms force off");

I put a launch button for the script on my task bar and I run it every
time after I play a movie.
