It surprises me that you consider this driver specific. NB that the driver correctly detected both screen resolutions. X just decided for a bad "common denominator" instead of defaulting xrandr to be "only external screen with full resolution" or at least driving both screens with 1280x800; so that decision is per-driver as well?
