Don't misconstrue my words. Ubuntu's support is based on what upstream provides, not feature-by-feature. If upstream decides to stop providing a certain feature, often such as in this case there is little we can do at the distro level. Because of this the conversation about supporting the feature needs to occur not here but upstream. In cases where the reporter has provided sufficient data and detail justifying the need, I will forward the request/issue myself. In this case, I think you are the person in the best position to do this, since it sounds like you understand the need more than I do. If you do not wish to communicate with upstream about this issue, it's probably okay; I know they're quite well aware of this feature regression and will eventually get around to implementing it.
