I managed to work around this bug in Intrepid doing the following steps:

- compile kernel 2.6.28 (from wireless-testing branch)
- use another wifi driver. (i now use rtl8187)

by switching to rtl8187, and fine-tuning the kernel, symptoms
disappeared. i concluded the b43/ssb driver shipped in Intrepid kernel
was to buggy to use.
