Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: openoffice.org
As a part of my work at the University, I have to share office documents
with others all the time. I end up having compatibility problems (format
problems) half of the time, which is completely unacceptable.
It happens with .doc often and with .docx becomes absurd (of course xls
and ppt are included). With plain documents with just text and different
levels of basic formatting it is usually good enough. If tables,
figures, formulas, forms or any other "complex" formatting is included,
the problems appear more often than not.
I know there are tons of bugs opened about particular formatting issues
but, I failed to find some kind of centralized effort to cope with the
Compatibility/Formatting issues.
In my opinion, these problems should be the #1 priority of the
developers/community. Not only make people frustrated with Oppenoffice
but also with Linux and in particular with Ubuntu. In my case, I have to
keep a VM running Windows just to be able to send "proper" .doc and
.docx documents to my colleagues, which is terrible, and of course, not
everyone would have the technical knowledge and resources ($) to do
that. Again, in my case, the most important problem to solve before
switching definitely to Linux has been the Openoffice issue (still
unsolved).
In brief, what I think is needed (critical) is some kind of centralized
effort and dedicated resources from Ubuntu/Canonical to work with
upstream to solve this problems. Centralize compatibility bugs, detailed
problems with example documents, developers working exclusively in this
area, etc.
A project in the line of Hundred Papercuts but focused on Office
Papercuts would be extraordinarily useful, could represent a big change
for a lot of users and lower the switching bar for more.
