Complaining that there are lots of compatibility issues isn't really useful, it is well known there are many compatibility problems with doc/docx formats. Even Microsoft Office doesn't work properly in between different versions (2000, XP, 2003, 2007, etc) When I was still at the University myself (some years ago) I would get .doc files from my professor that would not render even close to properly in my version of Microsoft Office, and it was even the same application, just a different version!
Also note that docx support was just added to the official (Sun) version of OpenOffice in version 3.0 so there is still a LOT of work to be done before its reasonably useful. If I had the time to spend on doing this I would be more than happy to try to file bug reports upstream about all the problem areas with current OpenOffice doc/docx filters but I just don't have the time. If you want to help improve this area in the quickest manner the best course of action is to use the official version of OpenOffice from http://openoffice.org/ (on Linux or Windows) and file bugs about every compatibility problem you find at their bug tracker. If you do this do not mention Ubuntu in the bug reports, as they will think you are using the go-oo version and will just close the bugs without even looking at them.
