Do you have a ~/.bash_profile, ~/.bash_login or ~/.profile file? If so,
please attach them here. Bash will source each of these files in order
until it finds one that exists when you log in at a console. The default
~/.profile in Ubuntu will source ~/.bashrc (have a look at the defaults
in /etc/skel). So, if you don't have a ~/.bash_profile or ~/.bash_login
and haven't edited your ~/.profile, then logging in from a console will
see Bash source your ~/.bashrc.
This behaviour hasn't changed between Jaunty and Karmic. I've just
straced /sbin/login on both Jaunty and Karmic with/without a
~/.bash_profile, and both systems behave the same (~/.bashrc is sourced
when ~/.bash_profile doesn't exist, and isn't sourced when it does
exist).
