1). Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron), Kernel Linux 2.6.24-24-generic, GNOME
2.22.3

3). I expected the system to install updates and restart without any
issues.
4). After firing up my computer today I found updates ready for me to
download and install. I did so, restarted as instructed, but when my
system rebooted I was given a message stating that, "HAL failed to
initialize." I have no idea what that means. I've checked around here
and via Google in general, and it seems HAL involves a number of Ubuntu
aspects.
My issues specifically are that my USB devices don't seem to work - as
my printer is no longer recognized, and there is "no network
connection." Well, the latter is not the case, as I am online. My cable
modem is fed to my router which is fed directly to my computer. I also
have no trouble connecting via wifi with my DS. So, nothing seems to be
wrong with my network. Yet, when I opened Firefox, it loads the "working
offline" page. I have to manually uncheck the "work offline" mode.
Everything else seems to work as normal - though things certainly
aren't.
I know it was a result of today's update, as it was working fine before
the update, and I have the system set to check for updates daily, and I
download any available update daily.
