Since this problem caused the system to be unusable I reinstalled Ubuntu
9.04 from a clean install disk.  I am no longer having this problem.  I
am unsure as to why this happened but the problem began immediately
after I did two back to back upgrades from 8.04 to 9.04.

Thank you very much for getting back to me.  I am enjoying using Ubuntu
very much.  I use other operating systems very little now.  Last week I
had to use another operating system and encountered the "blue screen of
death" and remembered why I use Ubuntu.
