I'm right now using ubuntu 9.04 64bit. I've compiled my custom kernel
(2.6.30), and guess what? hibernate and suspend works! I've also tried
the 32bit jaunty and same, hibernate and suspend works with the custom
compiled kernel 2.6.30.

Am not sure what solved the problem..if it's the new 2.6.30 kernel or
the fact that i customized the build to suite my turion 64x2 processor.
(i just chose my processor in the config).

I'll try the karmic alpha release. thanks!
