Sorry, I don't have the time to try your suggestions (of trying latest
development release + upstream kernel) right now but I can say that
with Kubuntu Jaunty, KDE 4.2.2, I can logout without trouble on  this
machine.

uname -a output:
Linux joris-vaio 2.6.28-13-generic #45-Ubuntu SMP Tue Jun 30 22:12:12
UTC 2009 x86_64 GNU/Linux

apport-collect -p linux 264317 is giving some problems, hope to get
this working.
