file and ended up with the folling working configuration:
START - WORKAROUND

and after restarting hal (sudo /etc/init.d/hal restart) all is working now.
END - WORKAROUND
the only strange thing is that my solution is the opposite configuration of
yours cause you said:
(1: exists="true", 2: exists="false")
