I can confirm this problem for Karmic although I believe it has been
around at least since Jaunty.
Maybe this has something to do with unsuccessful commands not being
saved in the history anymore? This is something I realized recently to
have happened. I think it's arguable whether that is a bug or a
feature.
$ env|grep HIST
HISTSIZE=1000
HISTCONTROL=ignoreboth;erasedups
$ sort ~/.bash_history | uniq -d -c | sort -n | tail -n 4
10 top
12 bg
15 sudo aptitude
24 pidof xfdesktop
