I am seeing this in Jaunty. Also had the same problem with Intrepid as
well. I am using the XF86AudioMute keyboard mapping to mute/unmute
sound.

With music playing, I press the mute button. The sound is muted, the
volume applet icon changes to a muted icon, and the notification is
displayed showing a muted speaker and a volume bar that is all grey
(volume = 0).

If I press the mute button again immediately, all is fine. The sound
comes back, the volume applet icon changes to a non-muted icon, and the
notification shows a non-muted speaker and the volume bar shows the
original volume level. In my case, its all bright (volume = 100%).

If I wait 10 secs after pressing the mute button to mute the sound and
pressing it a second time to unmute the sound, the behavior changes.
The volume applet icon remains a muted speaker icon, the notification
shows a NON-muted speaker, but the volume bar is all grey (volume = 0).

When in this state, there are some odd things immediately apparent:
 * the volume applect icon shows a muted speaker icon
 * the volume applet, when clicked, shows the mute checkbox is NOT checked
 * the volume applet, when clicked, shows the volume slider is still at 100

There are a couple of ways I can get the sound to return:
 * I can manually increase the volume using the XF86AudioRaiseVolume. In this
case, I have to bring the volume from 0 gradually up to 100 (ie, it does not
"jump" back).
 * I can click the volume applet, check mute, then uncheck mute. This returns
the volume to the original level.
