@Colin Sorry for the delay in testing. I've now tried your linux- image-2.6.28-14-generic_2.6.28-14.47_i386 on the original M300 I reported the error from. Without blacklisting any modules and with the system fully updated (apart from the kernel package, clearly!) the sound now works fine and there's no sign of a panic.
