Public bug reported: Binary package hint: ghostscript
My Brother MFC-7420 B&W laser printer will only print blank pages in karmic. This printer worked flawlessly with the Brother-supplied driver on Kubuntu Hardy and Intrepid, 32 and 64 bit, KDE3 and KDE4. Further, I have two MFC-7420s, one connected via USB to this computer, another via LAN to a remote computer. If I print from this computer to the LAN Cups server (which is running Hardy), it still prints blank pages on the remote printer. If I print from the remote computer to this Cups server, it prints okay. If it is a four-page document, it prints four blank pages, not just one. I tried printing grayscale (from program) - no effect. Also, I tried printing some text with lpr, still printed blank. I have both hardy and karmic installed on this computer - the hardy system prints okay. The cups error_log says "E ... Weird page contents" for each document printed blank, which seems to come from cups "void Gfx::display(Object *obj, GBool topLevel)" Any help appreciated - if you need more info to track this down please ask. I have filed this under ghostscript because the cups server seems to be printing okay when accessed from the hardy remote computer, and ghostscript had a similar bug... http://bugs.ghostscript.com/show_bug.cgi?id=690287 If you believe it would be better assigned elsewhere, please let me know and I will resubmit it. this computer (karmic): Kubuntu Karmic 9.10-64bit alpha3 ghostscript 8.70.dfsg.1-0ubuntu1 cups 1.3.11-1 kernel 2.6.31-3-generic (same result with 2.6.31-5-generic) printer Brother MFC-7420 printer driver brmfc7420lpr-2.0.1-1.i386.deb cupswrapperMFC7420-2.0.1-2.i386.deb Result: blank pages print if printed locally or remotely this computer (hardy): Kubuntu Hardy 8.04.2-64bit ghostscript 8.61.dfsg.1-1ubuntu3.2 cupsys 1.3.7-1ubuntu3.5 kernel 2.6.24-24-generic printer Brother MFC-7420 printer driver brmfc7420lpr-2.0.1-1.i386.deb cupswrapperMFC7420-2.0.1-2.i386.deb Result: prints correctly if printed locally or remotely remote computer: Kubuntu Hardy 8.04-32bit ghostscript 8.61.dfsg.1-1ubuntu3.2 cupsys 1.3.7-1ubuntu3.5 kernel 2.6.24-24-generic printer Brother MFC-7420 printer driver brmfc7420lpr-2.0.1-1.i386.deb cupswrapperMFC7420-2.0.1-2.i386.deb Result: prints correctly if printed locally or remotely error_log: (one error like this for every document printed) E [07/Aug/2009:19:00:49 -0500] [Job 30] Weird page contents access_log: ... localhost - - [07/Aug/2009:19:00:49 -0500] "GET /ppd/MFC-7420.ppd HTTP/1.1" 200 10281 - - localhost - - [07/Aug/2009:19:00:49 -0500] "POST /printers/MFC-7420 HTTP/1.1" 200 20588 Print-Job successful-ok localhost - - [07/Aug/2009:19:00:49 -0500] "POST / HTTP/1.1" 200 185 Get-Notifications successful-ok localhost - - [07/Aug/2009:19:00:49 -0500] "POST / HTTP/1.1" 200 110 Get-Job-Attributes successful-ok ...
