Thanks  I will follow that with keen interest.

In fact, the current version of the kernel does a reasonable job of 
managing the fans.  There is an acpi problem, however -- on waking, fans 
only operate in the state they were in at the time of being put to 
sleep.  So sleep when fans are off and  wake with fans off, never to be 
activated again.  Otherwise fans run continuously at the speed they were 
running when system was put to sleep.

Rebooting fixes that, of course.
