Having done an apt-get update and apt-get install linux to get:
Linux kereru 2.6.28-15-generic #48-Ubuntu SMP Wed Jul 29 08:54:56 UTC
2009 i686 GNU/Linux
DKMS failed to rebuild the new Nvidia kernel drivers and X would not
start.
This is because linux-headers-2.6.28-15-generic was not installed,
resulting in the following error in the DKMS log:
* Running DKMS auto installation service for kernel 2.6.28-15-generic
* nvidia (180.60)...
...fail!
I worked round it by using apt-get to manually install the headers,
whereupon DKMS took over and built me a driver that worked.
