I found this bug report:
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/76110

And followed these instructions:
http://monespaceperso.org/blog-en/2009/05/09/upgrade-alsa-1020-on-ubuntu-jaunty-904/

I am now running ALSA 1.0.20

cat /proc/asound/version:

Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.20.
Compiled on Aug 11 2009 for kernel 2.6.28-14-server (SMP).

But still my sound card can not be detected.

from dmesg:

[ 9.050033] ALSA
/usr/src/alsa/alsa-driver-1.0.20/pci/hda/../../alsa-kernel/pci/hda/hda_intel.c:1301:
 hda-intel: no codecs initialized
[ 9.050080] HDA Intel 0000:00:1b.0: PCI INT A disabled

aplay -l
aplay: device_list:223: no soundcards found...
