Did you perhaps upgrade from an early version of grub2? This is probably
caused by an incorrect /etc/default/grub file. The current default looks
like this:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
... but if instead you had:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="quiet splash"
... then you'd find those options added to recovery mode as well as
normal mode.
