Public bug reported: STEPS TO REPRODUCE * Installed Ubuntu Studio 9.04 on a 20 Gigabyte partition of a Dell Inspiron 1520 - During the install I had a wired LAN connection autoconfigured successfully - I selected the audio workstation and LDPSI plugins options (ie. 2 out of the 4 options for Ubuntu Studio) * Called update-manager for the first time * Updates proceeded until I got a crash which completely hung my system * I think the updating information at the time said something like 'setting up notification-daemon' * I was able to use Alt-Ctrl-F1 through to F4 to get to the shells - I could type my username and press return on each of the shells but then they would hang too - I tried this in a few of the shells (ie. F1, F2, F4) - Upon pressing Alt-Ctrl-F7 then I got a completely black screen and could never return to the F1 to F4 shells again - I tried Alt-Ctrl-Del and Alt-Ctrl-Backspace but nothing happened - I tried to power off the machine by holding down the power button for less than 3 seconds but this would not work * Upon logging back in I now have a very ugly looking desktop - big square buttons - so the desktop widgets must have fallen back to some old windowing or something * When I look at /var/log/apt/term.log the last few lines read

I was carrying out this reinstall in the hope of fixing it. Thus it seems to be reproduceable. I am willing to reproduce it again if you need me to * Previously I would encountered crashed quite frequently - especially when using Audacity * My previous installation was pretty new too - I'd only being using it for a few days ProblemType: Bug Architecture: i386 DistroRelease: Ubuntu 9.04 Package: update-manager 1:0.111.9 PackageArchitecture: all ProcEnviron: LANG=en_IE.UTF-8 SHELL=/bin/bash SourcePackage: update-manager Uname: Linux 2.6.28-3-rt i686 ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: apport-bug i386 metacity notification-daemon ubuntustudio update-manager -- System crashed when update-manager called for the first time after fresh install upon setting up notification-daemon https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/412182 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list [email protected] https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
