I'm not able to test this in Karmic right now, but i suppose that evolution in karmic is a new version that does not have this bug. My evolution version in Jaunty also does not have this bug, but it is on Intrepid version, both are one in my virtualbox and my wife's pc at work also intrepid one. Is there may be a way to update the repo of evolution and install the jaunty version in intrepid?
