Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.20-6-generic

=========================

... for a 2007-02-01 update from an up-to-date Edgy system to pre-
Feisty.

I had expected this to be a more-or-less feasible thing to do, as
Feisty's release date is getting nearer. I updated using ``gksudo
'update-manager -d'''.

One-line summary: even worse than it was when I was updating from Dapper to
pre-Edgy.

The system is a IBM (now Lenovo) ThinkPad T42. Nothing spectacular.

* Suspending to ram stopped working.

No matter whether I press `Fn-F4' or select the item in `gnome-power-
manager''s list, the screen goes black, the moon-light begins blinking
-- as is used to -- but then -- not as it used to -- the screensaver's
unlocking password dialog comes up again. The moon-light keeps blinking
even if I log back into the system again. Exactly the same story for
suspending to disk.

* The hanging-while-booting problem is still not fixed.

See <https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/74522>.

* `initrd.img'.

In `/boot/', the `initrd.img' that corresponds to the previous (Edgy)
kernel version was truncated to zero length during the installation
process. Restoring it with the Feisty `update-initramfs' and friends is
not possible because the ``udev hook script requires at least kernel
version 2.6.19''.

* Disk space.

The free disk space required (that the installer had calculated) was not
enough. I noticed quickly enough and was able to delete some files from
the root file system to circumvent an abortion of the upgrading process
because of lacking disk space.

To make sure that it wasn't some sort of transient error, I rebooted once more
with the Feisty Linux kernel and could reproduce all the kernel-related issues.

After having restored the destroyed Edgy Linux kernel's `initrd.img' from
another machine I rebooted with the Edgy Linux kernel and everything save the
``hanging-while-booting problem'') is ``fixed''. This is of course neither a
real option nor a solution. (... but the reason why I filed
this report against the `linux-image-2.6.20-6-generic' package.)

Feel free to fork this report into different ones or tell me to. I will
happily try to help.
