I can confirm the bug, but not the workaround.

The attached file should show no whitespace errors when loaded with
indent-tabs-mode set to nil.  However, you do get a warning.

Adding (whitespace-global-mode 't) to .emacs did not change anything for
me.  However, note how whitespace-global-mode gets invoked; you may have
to revisit the file in order to make it run (i.e. C-x C-v RET in the
buffer).
