In Ubuntu Karmic, after the kernel 2.6.31-2, my CRT monitor will make
audible clicks and appear to change modes, but all that comes up is a
blank black screen. I can hear the computer's drive still ticking away,
and if I pretend to login, I can then SSH into the machine and use VNC
to control it. In other words, this blank screen is not an indication of
the machine freezing up.
Recovery mode is no different.
