Worse still, when I installed Karmic alpha 4 just now, it told me that /home 
would be
formatted when I explicitly didn't check the 'format' button.  I suspect
this "Ready for Installation" screen is sloppily written when it
comes to the partition format warning, and doesn't check to see
whether the partition is actually going to be formatted.  (Either
that, or the earlier screen is marking partitions for formatting
when the user didn't ask for it, which would be worse.)

I played it safe and didn't even have the installer mount /home!

This part at least should be fixed for Karmic.
